MONCEL (A Short form of the artists maiden name Monica Ceballos) was born in 1970 in Colombia. She has a degree in Graphic Design and Photography from “Taller Cinco” Design Centre in Bogota. Following her graduation, Moncel worked full-time in Graphic Design, while developing her distinctive painting style, vibrant, bold, life-affirming images, painted primarily in flat 2D colours. During this period, Moncel won 3 emerging awards in America. In 2001 Moncel moved to Cyprus and turned finally to the full-time pursuit of her passion for painting. “The orange’s spherical form can be seen as a metaphor for its “universal” appeal. It stands alone as a fruit defined by its colour. Therefore the decision to turn it black emphasizes its form and challenges our perception of “orange” the color and ”orange” the fruit. Orange juice is versatile and is an essential mixer drink. It complements many other flavours with its rare ability to balance out both the bitter and the sweet. The decoration and encrusting of the orange with glass stones is a recognition of its royal standing among other fruits and allows the viewer to appreciate the beauty of the orange as if it were a precious jewel.”
